What Invisalign can treat

Clear aligners handle most of what traditional braces handle, and a few things patients assume are permanent:

• Crowding — teeth overlapping because there was never quite enough room
• Spacing and gaps, including a single stubborn gap between front teeth
• Relapse — the very common case of teeth that shifted back years after childhood braces
• Bite issues: overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite, within limits
• Teeth that have drifted after a tooth was lost or extracted
• Pre-restorative alignment — straightening before veneers so less tooth structure has to be removed

Complex skeletal cases sometimes need traditional orthodontics or a specialist, and we will tell you honestly if yours is one — an aligner plan that cannot deliver the result is worse than a referral.

How treatment works at the studio

It begins with a digital scan rather than a tray of impression material, plus photographs and X-rays. From those, we plan the movement of every tooth from where it is now to where it should end up — and you see that plan as a simulation before committing, which is the part most patients find persuasive. If the projected result is not what you want, we adjust it before a single aligner is made.

Then the aligners arrive and the work becomes yours: worn 20 to 22 hours a day, out for meals and brushing, changed on the schedule we set. You will see us periodically to check progress and hand over the next stage. Most cases also use small tooth-coloured attachments — subtle bumps bonded to certain teeth that give the aligners something to grip for particular movements.

Treatment length depends entirely on the case: minor corrections can finish in a few months, comprehensive cases run a year or more. We will give you a realistic timeline at the planning stage rather than an optimistic one.

Why not mail-order aligners?

Direct-to-consumer aligner companies cut a corner, and the corner is that nobody examines you. No X-rays, no assessment of the bone and gums holding your teeth in place, no one checking whether decay or gum disease should be treated before teeth are moved, and no clinician watching what happens month to month.

Moving teeth is a biological process, not a product. Done without supervision it can loosen teeth, expose roots, worsen a bite, or damage teeth that were unhealthy to begin with — and the corrective work is considerably more involved than the shortcut. If paying for treatment is a concern, tell us; there are payment options worth discussing before you take that risk.

Coverage in Ontario

Orthodontic treatment sits in its own category on Ontario dental plans, separate from basic and major services, and usually carries a lifetime maximum rather than an annual one — a fixed amount available once, not renewing each year. Many plans limit orthodontic coverage to dependants under a certain age, so adult coverage varies widely and is worth confirming specifically rather than assuming.

Plans typically pay orthodontics in instalments across treatment rather than in one payment, and most require predetermination before starting — which we submit for you. Straight answers

Does Invisalign hurt?

Expect pressure and tenderness for a day or two after each new aligner — that sensation is the treatment working. It is generally described as milder than braces, and there are no brackets or wires to irritate your cheeks. Most people find the first week the most noticeable and the rest routine.

Will people be able to tell?

Rarely, at conversational distance. The aligners are clear and thin, though the attachments used in many cases are slightly visible up close. Compared with fixed braces the difference is substantial, which is why aligners suit adults working in client-facing roles — a good share of our patients.

What happens after treatment finishes?

You wear retainers — and this is the part people underestimate. Teeth drift back toward where they started, permanently and indefinitely, so retainers are not an optional epilogue but part of the treatment. Most patients wear them nightly long term. It is the single biggest predictor of whether your result lasts.

Can I whiten my teeth during or after Invisalign?

Usually after, and there is a good reason to wait: straightening exposes surfaces that were previously overlapped, and whitening beforehand can leave uneven colour once teeth move. Finishing treatment and then whitening gives an even result — and it is a satisfying way to end the process.
