What the IFHP is
The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides temporary health coverage — including dental care — for refugees, protected persons, refugee claimants, and certain other newcomers who are not yet covered by a provincial health plan like OHIP. It is run by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and administered through Medavie Blue Cross.
What IFHP dental coverage includes
IFHP dental coverage focuses on urgent and essential care — treating pain, infection, and injury. Some treatments need approval from the program before they can begin. If yours does, we will tell you and handle the paperwork. Cosmetic treatments are not covered.
As of May 1, 2026, the IFHP covers 70% of eligible dental services. Patients pay the remaining 30% directly to the clinic at the time of the visit. We will always tell you the exact amount before any treatment begins — you will never be surprised by a bill here.
Coming in for care
Bring your IFHP document or member number to your appointment. If you are in pain, tell us when you book — urgent care is exactly what this coverage is for, and we will see you as soon as we can. Not sure if you are covered? Contact us first. We are glad to check for you before you come in.
