What’s included in a complete oral exam

A complete oral examination — the term you’ll see on insurance statements and plan documents — is the comprehensive assessment done when you’re new to a practice, or when it’s been several years since your last thorough review. At Distillery Dental Studio it covers:

• Full charting of every tooth — existing fillings, crowns, wear, cracks, and early decay
• Gum and periodontal assessment — measuring the health of the tissue and bone holding your teeth in place
• Oral cancer screening — a check of the soft tissues of your mouth, tongue, and throat
• Bite and jaw evaluation — how your teeth meet, and whether grinding or clenching is leaving evidence
• Digital X-rays where needed — because roughly a third of decay hides between teeth and below the gumline
• A written treatment plan — what’s urgent, what can wait, what’s entirely optional, and what each part involves

How the visit actually goes

It starts with a conversation, not an instrument. We ask what’s brought you in, what’s bothered you in the past, what you’d like to change, and what you’d rather avoid — including whether dental visits make you anxious. That conversation shapes everything that follows.

Then the examination itself: unhurried, explained as we go, with an intraoral camera so you can see what we see rather than taking our word for it. Most complete exams take about an hour, and many patients pair theirs with a cleaning in the same visit. You leave with a clear picture of your oral health and a plan sequenced around your priorities and your timeline — never a pressure pitch.

Coverage in Ontario

Dental care sits outside OHIP in Ontario, so complete oral exams are covered through private and public dental plans rather than provincial health insurance. Most employee benefits plans cover complete exams under basic or diagnostic services, typically at or near full reimbursement, and most plans reimburse them in line with standard Ontario dental plan guidelines.

We also welcome patients covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which includes complete examinations among its covered services, and by the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). Straight answers

How often do I need a complete oral exam?

Once when you join the practice, and then generally every three to five years — with shorter recall exams at your regular checkups in between. The recall exam is the quick health check; the complete exam is the full re-survey. If your health, medications, or circumstances change significantly, we may suggest one sooner.

Does OHIP cover dental exams?

No — routine dental care isn’t covered by OHIP for most adults in Ontario. Coverage comes from workplace benefits, private plans, or public programs like the CDCP, Healthy Smiles Ontario for eligible children and youth under 17, and the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program for eligible low-income seniors. What’s the difference between a complete exam and a checkup?

Depth. A recall exam — the standard checkup — looks for what’s changed since last time and takes a few minutes. A complete oral exam surveys everything from scratch: every tooth charted, gums measured, bite assessed, soft tissues screened, and a full plan written. Think of one as a status update and the other as a full inspection.

Is a complete oral exam covered by insurance in Ontario?

It depends on what the exam includes — particularly whether X-rays are taken at the same visit — and most plans reimburse it generously as a diagnostic service. We’ll confirm your coverage before your appointment and tell you plainly what, if anything, you’ll owe. No surprises is a policy here, not a slogan.
