When a specific exam is the right appointment
Not every visit needs a full survey of your mouth. Sometimes there’s one thing bothering you, and what you want is an answer about that thing:
- A tooth that’s started aching, or become sensitive to hot and cold
- A chip, crack, or a filling that’s come out
- Swelling, a lump, or a sore spot that hasn’t healed in two weeks
- Pain when biting down on one particular side
- Something you noticed while brushing that you’d like looked at
- A second opinion on treatment recommended elsewhere
You don’t need to be an existing patient, and you don’t need to know what’s wrong — describing it as best you can is enough.
What happens at the appointment
We start with your account of it: when it started, what makes it worse, whether it wakes you up. That narrows things considerably before we look. Then we examine the area in question, test the tooth if that’s what’s involved, and take a targeted X-ray if we need to see below the surface.
You leave with a diagnosis in plain language and your options laid out — including the option of doing nothing yet, where that’s reasonable. If the problem needs treating urgently we’ll say so and, where we can, treat it the same visit. If it can wait, we’ll tell you that too rather than manufacturing urgency.
Coverage in Ontario
A specific oral examination is a distinct category on Ontario dental plans — separate from a complete exam and from a recall exam — and it is what most plans expect to see when you attend for a particular problem. It falls under diagnostic services, which plans generally reimburse well, though most limit how many exams of any kind they will cover in a year.
If X-rays are taken, those are billed separately, also as diagnostic services. Patients with the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) have examinations among their covered services, subject to program frequency rules. What’s the difference between a specific and a complete oral exam?
Scope. A complete oral exam surveys everything — every tooth charted, gums measured, bite assessed, soft tissues screened — and is what you have when joining a practice. A specific exam investigates one concern properly and efficiently. If we find something during a specific exam that suggests a fuller look is warranted, we’ll tell you and let you decide.
Do I have to be an existing patient?
No. We see people specifically because something is wrong, whether or not they’ve been here before, and whether or not they intend to switch practices afterward. If you’d like to become a patient, that’s a separate and entirely optional conversation — see our new patients page.
Is this the same as an emergency appointment?

Will I get treatment at the same visit?
Often, yes — particularly for straightforward problems like a lost filling or a small chip. More involved treatment usually needs its own appointment, both for time and so you can consider your options rather than deciding under pressure. Either way, pain relief is the first priority.
